5 Plumbing Basics That Every Homeowner Should Know

Being familiar with your home’s plumbing fittings and system might help you avoid plumbing mishaps and calamities. You don’t have to be an expert in plumbing to help others; all you need is a basic understanding of the subject. Here are some common plumbing hints to keep in mind!

  1. Know where the main valves and plumbing fixture valves are located.

The first thing you need to know is where the main water supply valves and plumbing fixture valves are located. It’s not enough to know where these valves are; you also need to be able to turn them off. Don’t worry; understanding how these valves function is simple. This is a simple but crucial plumbing tip since you can immediately switch off the water supply in the event of a plumbing emergency, such as a breaking water pipe or a toilet overflow.

2. Water pressure should not exceed 80 pounds per square inch.

When the water pressure is too high, it can be quite dangerous to your plumbing appliances and system. Because the fixtures can’t withstand the high water flow, pipes rupture and the fixtures are destroyed. The general rule is that the pressure should not exceed 80 psi. Because you won’t be able to compute the psi on your own, it’s essential to invest in a water pressure gauge. However, if you are still unsure about the exact calculation of the psi, you can have a water company perform it for you. The majority of the time, these businesses do it for free.

3. Set a container beneath your water heater.

If your water heater is older, it may leak at some point. It’s best to plan ahead and install a suitable container (such as a bucket) behind the water heater. In the event of a water leak, this will act as an emergency solution. After all, you never know when a leak in the tank will occur, so it’s better to be prepared.

4. The pressure relief valve on a water heater should be operational.

The pressure release valve is one of the most important features of a water heater. When the water heater overheats or can’t handle a high water pressure, this component works as a control system that releases water. Your water heater will be damaged and possibly explode if the pressure relief valve is broken. Allow a plumber or a water heater professional to inspect the heating tank for any potential problems.

5. Know How to Turn Off the Gas Main

Having a gas supply in your home is quite risky, which is why you must exercise extreme caution when using and maintaining it. You must be familiar with the gas line system and know where to cut off the gas supply line. Aside from that, check sure there are no combustible items in close proximity to the gas source. Gas leaks are extremely dangerous, and if you smell a foul gas odor or hear gas escaping, you must leave the premises immediately and notify your local emergency hotline.
