6 Reasons Why Electric Water Heaters Are Better Than Gas Water Heaters

Water heating accounts for 21% of household energy use in Australia, so choosing the best water heater for your needs is a wiser approach to save energy. To save money on energy, make sure you get a water heater that is the proper size for your needs. Water heater suppliers or manufacturers may be able to help you with your decision. Standard electric storage and electric instantaneous water heaters are the two types of electric water heaters. Electric instantaneous water heaters must be connected to the day-rate tariff, whereas standard electric storage water heaters use a reduced off-peak power pricing.

Despite the fact that electric water heaters have greater expenses than their gas-fueled equivalents, there are additional advantages to go electric.

  1. Installation Costs – To vent the exhaust, a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubing must be attached with a gas water heater. Only a special outlet or bare wiring will be required for electric water supplies.
  2. Safety – The risks of electrocution from defective wiring are significantly lower than the hazards of a gas leak exploding. Gas explosions can possibly cause property or home damage..
  3. Space Requirements – Electric water heaters can be placed without worry of an explosion or gas buildup in specific areas. Gas water heaters require additional ventilation on both sides and at the top.
  4. Cost of Purchase – Electric water heaters are less expensive than gas water heaters of same size.
  5. Installation of a Timer – On electric water heaters, you can install a timer unit to turn off the electricity to the entire tank at certain periods.
  6. Life Expectancy – Electric water heaters have a longer lifespan than gas water heaters because they have fewer components that are exposed to less direct heat.

In Australia, air-sourced heat pumps, a new technology in electric hot water systems, are now available. Heat pump devices heat water by extracting heat from the environment (air, water, or ground). In comparison to traditional electric or gas water heaters, they offer a substantially greater efficiency rating and lower running expenses.

Despite the advantages of electric hot water systems, certain Australian states and territories have agreed to phase out high-carbon electric water heaters. The goal of the agreement is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. Greenhouse-intensive electric hot water systems are no longer be allowed in new buildings under the Australian Building Code (BCA).
